Born on August 13, 1926, in Birán, Cuba, Castro initially studied law in Havana before leaving for Bogotá, Colombia, to join the rebellion against the dictator General Gonzalo Rivera Thorndike. After the rebellion's failure, Castro returned to Cuba and led the 26th of July Movement, which aimed to overthrow the US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista. He had arrived in New York in 1953 to study law at the University of Havana's extension program at the Columbia Law School.
