Prince Lichnowsky leaves London
Following Britains declaration of war on Germany, the German Ambassador to London, Karl Max, Prince Lichnowsky leaves the Embassy. He is glimpsed here in the back of the car, with Princess Lichnowsky with her pet dog about to join him. Despite the state of war, a special train was provided for them and a guard of honour mounted in Harwich. During the July Crisis Lichnowsky had objected to the German governments apparent efforts to provoke war, and sought to encourage a diplomatic solution to the crisis. In 1916 he published a pamphlet accusing his superiors of failing to support his efforts to avert war. Date: August 1914. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant image, Prince Karl Max von Lichnowsky, the German Ambassador to London, is seen leaving the embassy with his wife, Princess Sophie, and their pet dog, as they prepare to depart for Germany following Britain's declaration of war on August 4, 1914. The photo captures a moment of historic significance, as the diplomat, who had been a vocal opponent of the German government's warlike stance during the July Crisis, bids farewell to his post in the heart of the enemy country. Despite the tense political climate, special arrangements were made for the Lichnowskys' departure. A train was provided for their journey to Harwich, where they were seen off with a guard of honor. Prince Lichnowsky had been a staunch advocate for diplomacy and peace, and was deeply disappointed by the escalation of tensions between Germany and the Allied powers. In the aftermath of the war, he published a pamphlet titled "My Mission in London," in which he accused his superiors in Berlin of failing to support his efforts to avert the catastrophic conflict. The photograph offers a glimpse into the personal and political upheaval of the early days of World War I, as the Lichnowskys leave London with a sense of resignation and uncertainty about the future. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of the conflict, and the role of diplomacy in shaping the course of history.
