EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the young and radiant Prince and Princess Andrew of Greece, later known as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and Princess Alice of Battenberg, in the Russian Chapel in Darmstadt during their wedding ceremony in 1903. The grand event marked the last of the great royal gatherings in the small German town, bringing together an illustrious assembly of Russian, Greek, German, and English royals. Prince Andrew, born in 1882, was a first cousin of the Russian Tsar, while his bride, Princess Alice, born in 1885, was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Their union not only strengthened the bonds between the European monarchies but also paved the way for a remarkable royal legacy. The couple's wedding day was a spectacular affair, attended by an esteemed guest list that included Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra of Russia, King George I of Greece, and King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. The joyous occasion was a testament to the enduring connections between the European royal families, as well as the deep-rooted ties between the Greek and British monarchies. Their union produced four children: Princesses Cecilie, Sophie, and Margarita, and their youngest son, Prince Philip, who would later become the Duke of Edinburgh and the consort of Queen Elizabeth II. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and complex web of relationships that shaped the European royal landscape in the early 20th century.
