1894 Abdicated Born Divorce Eldest Historica Illness Marry Nairobi Received Returned Safari Simpson Succeeded Trip Wallis 15th 1928 1936 December
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, is seen at Nairobi Station in his safari kit in December 15, 1928. The Prince had been on an African trip when he received the devastating news of his father, King George V's, illness. Born in 1894, Edward was the eldest son of the monarch and the heir to the throne. The Prince's unexpected return to England came earlier than planned, as he felt it was his duty to be by his father's side during this critical time. King George V's health had been declining for some time, but the news of his illness came as a shock to the public, and the Prince's immediate return added to the sense of urgency. Edward's safari kit reflects his adventurous spirit and his love for Africa, which he had first discovered during his military service in South Africa in 1914. The Prince's African travels had become a regular feature of his life, and he was known for his passion for hunting and wildlife. However, this trip would be the last one for Edward as a Prince. In 1936, just a few years after this photograph was taken, he would succeed his father as King. But his reign would be short-lived, as he abdicated on December 10, 1936, to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. This decision was met with widespread public disapproval, and Edward's abdication marked the end of his reign and the beginning of his brother, George VI's, reign. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in British history, capturing the Prince's determination to be with his father during his final days and the uncertainty of what lay ahead for the monarchy.
