Proposed Channel Tunnel, works at Sangatte

The works at Sangatte on the French coast for the proposed Channel Tunnel in 1876, described in The Graphic as, " this gigantic and long-talked of scheme, " and, " splendid evidence of the determination and perseverance with which obstacles and impediments are met by scientific men of the present age." The tunnel workings did not make much progress until 1881 when work began in Britain, but by the middle of the decade the Government vetoed continuance of the work due to security concerns.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1876, showcases the early works at Sangatte on the French coast for the proposed Channel Tunnel - a grand endeavor that was described by The Graphic as "this gigantic and long-talked of scheme." The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the engineering marvel of the time, with workers meticulously excavating the ground in their quest to create a subterranean link between France and England. The Sangatte works represented the latest attempt to connect the two countries through an underwater tunnel, an idea that had been discussed for centuries. However, progress on the project was slow, with minimal headway made until 1881 when work began in Britain. The scene depicted in this photograph is a testament to the determination and perseverance of the scientific minds of the 19th century, who were undeterred by the seemingly insurmountable challenges and impediments. Despite the significant strides made in the excavation process, the tunnel workings did not progress as planned. By the middle of the decade, the British government ultimately vetoed the continuance of the work due to security concerns, marking a setback for the ambitious project. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as a reminder of the ingenuity and ambition of the Victorian era, and the relentless pursuit of innovation that continues to define human progress.
