EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the PZL P-11, an antiquated fighter aircraft initially flown in August 1931. As the skies of Europe braced for the impending storm of war, these brave machines were called upon to defend Poland against the formidable might of the German Luftwaffe. The PZL P-11, also known as the "Wilga," was a biplane fighter designed and manufactured by the Polish Aviation Works (PZL) in the interwar period. With its open cockpit and wooden construction, it may seem an anachronism compared to the advanced aircraft of the time. However, the P-11 was a capable and agile fighter in its day, equipped with a powerful engine and armament that made it a formidable opponent. When the German forces invaded Poland in September 1939, the PZL P-11s were pitted against the latest German fighters, including the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Heinkel He 111. Despite their valiant efforts, the Polish air force sustained heavy losses, and the P-11s were eventually forced to withdraw from the battlefields. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the Polish air force during those dark days of history. The PZL P-11 may be an antiquated fighter by today's standards, but it played a crucial role in the defense of Poland and the spirit of its people. This image, from Mary Evans Prints Online, is a rare glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into a time when the future of Europe hung in the balance.
