EDITORS COMMENTS
A New Reign Begins: Young Queen Elizabeth II on the Front Cover of The Sketch, 1952 In the autumn of 1952, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth were in mourning as they bid farewell to King George VI, who had passed away on February 6th after a long battle with lung cancer. His eldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth, aged just 25, was suddenly thrust into the role of monarch, becoming Queen Elizabeth II. This poignant photograph, taken a few months after the death of her father, graced the front cover of The Sketch on August 28, 1952. The image captures a young, determined Queen Elizabeth II, dressed in a simple yet elegant white blouse and skirt, with a serious yet resolute expression on her face. Her posture is regal, and her eyes reflect a deep sense of duty and commitment to her new role. The photograph was taken at Balmoral Castle, the Scottish retreat of the British monarchy, where the young Queen had gone to mourn her father's passing with her family. The serene setting of the Scottish Highlands provides a stark contrast to the turmoil and uncertainty that followed the death of King George VI. The image of the young Queen Elizabeth II on the front cover of The Sketch marked the beginning of a new era in British history. The 1950s would see her navigate the challenges of post-war reconstruction, decolonization, and the rise of the Commonwealth. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of her strength and resilience in the face of adversity, and her unwavering commitment to her role as monarch.
