EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the dedicated staff of Quex Park VAD Hospital in Birchington, Kent, during World War I. Established on October 15, 1914, by the Kent/178, Birchington Detachment, the hospital provided medical care, rehabilitation, and recuperation for soldiers wounded in the First World War. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, who is renowned for founding the Powell-Cotton Museum. In this image, the VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) staff are seen alongside domestic staff and the Powell-Cotton children, Diana (b. 1908), Mary (b. 1910), and Antoinette (b. 1913). The children's mother, Hannah, is at the forefront, wearing a nurse's uniform and holding a clipboard. The domestic staff, dressed in their uniforms, are busy preparing meals or doing laundry, while the VAD nurses attend to their patients. The hospital, located near the seaside, offered a tranquil environment for soldiers to recover, providing them with much-needed respite from the horrors of the battlefield. The hospital closed on January 31, 1919, marking the end of an important chapter in the history of Quex Park and the Powell-Cotton family. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who cared for the wounded soldiers during the Great War.
