EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the essence of the RAF 22 Squadron Search and Rescue team in action during the 1960s. Based at Thorney Island near Chichester, West Sussex, the squadron was established in 1955 and was responsible for carrying out vital search and rescue operations over a 60-nautical mile radius. In this image, two helicopters from the squadron are shown touching down on the ground, their rotors still spinning as they prepare to unload their crew. The crew of each helicopter consisted of a pilot, a navigator, and a crewman, all dressed in their distinctive orange and white jumpsuits and helmets, ready to face the challenges of a rescue mission. The helicopters, with their powerful engines and distinctive markings, were a common sight over the English Channel and the North Sea during this period. The squadron's fleet was used to rescue people from both land and sea, and their quick response times and skilled crews saved countless lives during their service. This photograph is a testament to the bravery and dedication of the RAF 22 Squadron Search and Rescue team during the 1960s, a time when their work was essential in ensuring the safety of those at sea and on land. The squadron's legacy continues to this day, with the RAF Search and Rescue Force continuing to provide a vital service to the people of the United Kingdom.
