EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative illustration depicts a pivotal moment in the history of the Second World War, as Royal Air Force (RAF) Beaufort bombers launch a daring attack on the German battle-cruiser Scharnhorst in Trondheim Fjord, Norway, on December 7, 1940. The Scharnhorst, a powerful warship and a symbol of the German Navy's might, had taken refuge in the fjord after engaging in a battle with British forces in the North Atlantic. The RAF's response was swift and determined. A total of 21 Beaufort Mk.I bombers, part of No. 224 Squadron, flew from their base in Iceland to carry out the mission. The aircraft, shown in the illustration releasing their bombs over the Scharnhorst, were equipped with torpedoes and armed with 0.303-inch Browning machine guns. The attack was a significant success, with several bombs hitting the battle-cruiser and causing substantial damage. Although the Scharnhorst was able to limp away from the fjord and eventually return to Germany for repairs, the raid marked a turning point in the war in the North Atlantic and demonstrated the growing threat posed by the RAF's long-range bomber capabilities. This historical illustration, from the Illustrated London News archive, offers a unique glimpse into the courage and determination of the RAF personnel involved in this daring mission. The image is a poignant reminder of the pivotal role played by the RAF in the Allied war effort during World War II.
