EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Raphicerus melanotis, the Cape grysbok, an antelope species native to South Africa. The illustration was created during the second voyage of discovery led by the renowned British explorer, Captain James Cook, between 1772 and 1775. The painting was produced by the naturalist and scientist, Johann George Adam Forster, who accompanied Cook on his expedition. Forster meticulously documented various flora and fauna encountered during their journey, resulting in this stunning illustration of the Cape grysbok. The Cape grysbok, also known as the Greis-bock in Dutch, is a small antelope belonging to the family Bovidae and the order Artiodactyla. This even-toed ungulate is characterized by its distinctive coat, which is a mix of brown, black, and white fur, providing excellent camouflage in its natural habitat. The Cape grysbok is native to South Africa and is the only species in the Antilopinae subfamily that is not found north of the equator. Forster's illustration of the Cape grysbok is an invaluable contribution to the scientific community, as it provides an accurate record of the animal's appearance during the late 18th century. This painting not only showcases the natural beauty of the Cape grysbok but also serves as a testament to the spirit of exploration and discovery that characterized the Age of Enlightenment. The painting was created by Johann George Adam Forster, who was born in 1754 and passed away in 1794. Forster was an accomplished naturalist, author, and ethnographer, who made significant contributions to the fields of natural history and anthropology. His work on Captain Cook's second voyage of discovery helped expand the scientific knowledge of the natural world during this period of intense exploration and discovery.
