EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Reading Football Club team during the 1904-05 season, with Herbert Smith (inset, top right) proudly wearing the captain's armband. Smith, born in 1877, was a versatile player who went on to make history by representing England at the 1908 Olympic Games in London, where they won the gold medal. Prior to his time with Reading, Smith played for Oxford University and later for Stoke City and Derby County. The team line-up in this photograph includes, from left to right, back row: J. Naisby, R. Riley, F. Bannisters, J. Raisbeck, and T. Paley. Middle row: J. Matthews, W. Secretary, and J. Henderson. Front row: J. McIntyre, H. Smith (captain), and J. Cummings. Harris, the trainer, is also pictured standing behind the team. The players are dressed in their distinctive Reading Football Club striped shirts, which have become synonymous with the team's identity, often referred to as the 'Biscuitmen' or 'Royals' due to the town's association with biscuit manufacturing and the royal connections of the county. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique look at the team that once took to the field at Elm Park, Reading's former home ground.
