EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two exotic birds, the Red-legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus) and the Wallcreeper (Tichodroma muraria). The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Naturaliste: Omnithologie" ornithology section of Dumont de Sainte-Croix's "Dictionnaire de Natural Science: Ornithology," published in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830. The Red-legged Honeycreeper, with its vibrant red legs and bright green plumage, is native to the Caribbean and Central America. Its beak is short and curved, making it an efficient nectar feeder. The bird is depicted perched on a branch, showcasing its distinctive features. The Wallcreeper, on the other hand, is a European species, characterized by its unique body shape and coloration. With a long, curved beak, this bird is adapted to feeding on insects and their larvae, which it finds by clinging to vertical surfaces with its strong feet. The Wallcreeper is shown in the illustration with its wings spread, as if ready to take flight. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was executed by Boure, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. This beautiful work of art showcases the intricate details of these two birds, captured through the skillful use of handcoloring and the meticulous technique of copperplate stipple engraving. It is a testament to the natural history artistry of the time and a reminder of the fascination with the natural world that drove scientific exploration and documentation during the 19th century.
