EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two intriguing birds native to South America: the Red-legged Seriema, Cariama cristata, and the Cream-colored Courser, Cursorius cursor. The Red-legged Seriema, also known as the Red-legged Seriema or the Red-legged Guan, is a large, wading bird with distinctive red legs and a long, slender neck. They are found in open grasslands and savannas of Central and South America. The Cream-colored Courser, on the other hand, is a small, ground-dwelling bird with a pale, cream-colored body and long, powerful legs. They are also known as the Rufous-vented Plain Chaser or the Rufous-vented Courser. This exquisite illustration is from the "Dictionnaire de Natural Histoire: Ornithologie," published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The work was produced under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and published by F.G. Levrault. The illustration itself was painted by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a renowned painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Madame Massard. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of the artisans involved in its creation. The Red-legged Seriema and Cream-colored Courser are depicted in their natural habitats, with the seriema shown wading in a marshy area and the courser standing in the grass. The use of stipple engraving, a technique that involves the application of small dots of ink to create shading and texture, adds to the depth and realism of the image. This beautiful work of art not only showcases the natural beauty of these two fascinating birds but also serves as a window into the natural history of the past. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving and documenting the natural world for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
