EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F.G. Levrault in Paris, France, in 1816, showcases two endangered mammalian species: the Red Wolf (Canis lupus rufus) and the Silver Fox (Vulpes vulpes). The illustration, from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Red Wolf, depicted on the left, is a critically endangered subspecies of gray wolf native to the southeastern United States. Once abundant, their numbers dwindled due to habitat loss, human persecution, and hybridization with coyotes. The Red Wolf's distinctive reddish-brown coat and pointed ears are evident in this detailed engraving. On the right, the Silver Fox, with its striking silver-gray coat, is shown. Historically, Silver Foxes were hunted for their luxurious fur, leading to population declines. Today, conservation efforts have helped stabilize their numbers. This beautiful and historically significant artwork, created by Pretre and expertly engraved by Nargeot under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, provides a glimpse into the natural world of over two centuries ago. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving endangered species and their habitats for future generations.
