Aramean Archaeological Banquet Basalt Carving Citadel Hittite Istanbul Meal Orient Orthostat Ritual Tool Walk Hitite Neo Hittite Samal

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this ancient orthostat, two distinct scenes are intricately carved on either side, offering a glimpse into the social and cultural life of the Late Hitite Period (9th century BC). The left side of the basalt stone depicts a grand banquet, with figures seated at a long table laden with food and drink. The men, dressed in elaborate garments and adorned with jewelry, appear to be in a joyful and celebratory mood, raising their hands in a toast. The presence of an ax or axe on the table may suggest that this was a ritualistic feast, perhaps connected to agricultural or military victories. On the right side of the orthostat, a group of males is depicted walking in a procession. Their postures and clothing differ, indicating various social statuses and roles. The detail in their facial expressions and the intricate decoration on their garments reveal the skill and artistry of the ancient carvers. The presence of this orthostat on the west side of the citadel gate at Samal (Sinjerli) suggests that it may have been a decorative element of the gate itself, showcasing the power and wealth of the Neo-Hittite Kingdom. Today, this precious relic from the ancient age of the Orient is preserved and displayed at the Museum of Ancient Orient in Istanbul, Turkey, allowing modern viewers to marvel at the rich history and artistic achievements of the Hitites.
