EDITORS COMMENTS
This print commemorates a significant milestone in American history: the result of the Fifteenth Amendment and the rise and progress of the African race in America. The Fifteenth Amendment, ratified on March 30, 1870, granted African American men the right to vote, a fundamental right that had been denied to them since the founding of the United States. The central scene of this print depicts a grand parade on Monument Street in Baltimore, celebrating the enactment of this historic amendment. The joyous crowd is filled with African Americans, proudly waving flags and carrying banners. In the background, the Capitol building is visible, symbolizing the government's recognition of the rights of African Americans. The vignettes surrounding the central scene depict various moments in African American history, from the plantation life to the Battle of Gettysburg. These scenes represent the struggles and triumphs of the African race in America, leading up to this final accomplishment. The upper portion of the print features busts of key figures in African American history, including Frederick Douglass, John Brown, and Schuyler Colfax. Surrounding these busts are various tools and implements, symbolizing the hard work and determination of the African American community. Two urns flank the central group, representing the past and the future, and the hope for a brighter future for African Americans in America. This print serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of the African American community, and the progress they made towards achieving equal rights and recognition in American society.
