The photograph is part of an album containing 183 images, compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, of the 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), between 1941 and 1943. The album, which is now housed in the archives, provides a visual record of the experiences of the 7th Armoured Division during this pivotal period in history. The teller mine, a type of anti-tank mine, is a common hazard that soldiers encountered in the North African desert. These mines were designed to be triggered by the weight of a tank or other heavy vehicle, causing the track to be destroyed and rendering the vehicle immobile. The use of teller mines was a significant tactic employed by the Axis forces during the North African Campaign, and their presence posed a constant threat to the Allied advance. The broken track of the tank in this photograph serves as a stark reminder of the realities of war and the sacrifices made by the soldiers who fought in North Africa during World War Two.
