EDITORS COMMENTS
Emile Reynaud, a pioneering French inventor, is recognized as the father of animated film. Known for his groundbreaking innovations, Reynaud created the Praxinoscope in 1877, an early device used to project sequences of drawings or photographs in motion. In December 1888, he unveiled the Théâtre Optique, an improvement upon the Praxinoscope, which could project multiple images simultaneously, creating the illusion of movement. This advancement led to the first public screenings of animated films, known as Pantomimes Lumineuses, in Paris in 1892. This stunning poster, designed by Jules Cheret in 1892, advertises these historic events. Measuring 124 x 88 cm, the Art Nouveau litography showcases an upright, colorful image of a woman and a group of people gathered in a theater, excitedly watching the Pantomimes Lumineuses. The feminine and dynamic design perfectly encapsulates the innovative spirit of the era. Reynaud's inventions paved the way for the development of the film industry and revolutionized entertainment.
