EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative collection of four color photographs captures the aftermath of the bombing of RFA Sir Galahad during the Falklands War in June 1982. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Sir Galahad was a supply ship stationed off the coast of Fitzroy, in the South Atlantic, providing essential logistical support to British forces. On the night of June 7-8, 1982, Argentine aircraft attacked the vessel, resulting in a catastrophic fire that engulfed the ship. In these images, taken by WO2 David Langham of the 81 Ordnance Company, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, we see the devastating consequences of the attack. The photographs depict the Sir Galahad ablaze, with thick black smoke billowing from the ship's hull. The flames illuminate the night sky, casting an eerie glow over the surrounding waters. The intensity of the fire is evident in the bright orange and red hues that dominate the frames. The photographs are a poignant reminder of the dangers and hardships faced by the British forces during the Falklands War. The bravery and resilience of the crew and support personnel are highlighted in their efforts to contain the fire and prevent further damage to the vessel. Despite the destruction, the photographs also serve as a testament to the determination and resourcefulness of the British military in the face of adversity. These images offer a unique and powerful perspective on a significant moment in modern military history, providing a visual record of the Falklands War that continues to resonate with audiences today.
