EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts Richard Brothers (1757-1824), a British-Israelite religious enthusiast who declared himself to be the Nephew of God. Born in 1757, Brothers' unconventional beliefs and eccentric behavior led him to be committed to an asylum in 1795, where he remained until his discharge in 1806. Despite his time in the asylum, Brothers was deemed harmless and continued to spread his unique religious views. Brothers was a fervent believer in the British-Israelite movement, which held that the ancient Israelites were the ancestors of the British people. He gained a significant following and even published a book, "A Revelation of the Divine Origin of the British Nation," in which he expounded on his beliefs. Despite the controversy surrounding his claims, Brothers' influence extended beyond his immediate followers. His ideas influenced later British-Israelite movements, such as the Plymouth Brethren and the Christian Identity movement. Brothers' legacy continues to be felt in modern-day religious and political circles. This photograph print offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable and enigmatic figure in British religious history. Despite his time in the asylum, Brothers remained a passionate and dedicated advocate for his beliefs, leaving a lasting impact on the religious landscape of his time and beyond.
