The burned district, visible in the foreground, bears testament to the destructive impact of the Civil War on this once-proud city. Richmond, the Confederate capital, had been the main eastern theater of war for over three long years. The city had been besieged by Union forces since the beginning of March 1865, and on April 3, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered a final assault.
