The RMS (Royal Mail Ship) Empress of Britain, an ocean liner built between 1928 and 1931, owned by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company. The ship provided a transatlantic passenger service from spring to autumn between Canada and Europe from 1931 to 1939. In her time she was the largest, fastest and most luxurious ship on the England-Canada route. She was torpedoed in October 1940, being the largest liner lost during the Second World War and the largest ship sunk by a U-boat. Photograph by Ralph Ponsonby Watts

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majestic RMS Empress of Britain, the largest, fastest, and most luxurious ocean liner on the England-Canada route during the 1930s. Built between 1928 and 1931 by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company, this transatlantic leisure transport icon provided a seasonal service between Canada and Europe from spring to autumn. With a length of 790 feet and a top speed of 21 knots, the Empress of Britain was a marvel of maritime engineering and a symbol of opulence and elegance. The image, taken by renowned photographer Ralph Ponsonby Watts in October 1932, showcases the ship's distinctive funnels and sleek silhouette as she cuts through the tranquil waters. The Empress of Britain's grandeur and sophistication epitomized the golden age of ocean liner travel, offering passengers a luxurious escape from the everyday. Unfortunately, the Empress of Britain's story did not end on a positive note. In October 1940, during World War II, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat, making it the largest liner lost during the conflict and the largest ship sunk by a U-boat. This tragic event marked the end of an era for ocean liner travel and left a lasting impact on maritime history. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the grandeur and allure of the RMS Empress of Britain, a testament to the bygone era of transatlantic passenger travel and a symbol of the rich maritime heritage of the 1930s.
