Roland, renowned for his bravery and unwavering loyalty, was tasked with guarding the rearguard of Charlemagne's army as they returned from their successful campaign in Spain. As the Saracens launched a surprise attack, Roland and his loyal companion Oliver sounded their horns, alerting the main army. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Roland and his men fought fiercely, holding off the enemy for hours. However, Roland's eventual defeat was a turning point in the battle. Wounded and exhausted, he was approached by the Saracen champion, Haroun al Raschid, who challenged him to single combat. Roland, though weakened, refused to yield, and in a final act of defiance, he struck down Haroun before succumbing to his injuries.
