EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, HMS Albion (R07) can be seen berthed in a British naval dockyard, shortly before her conversion into a Commando Carrier in December 1960. The imposing warship, with its distinctive angled flight deck, looms large against the grey backdrop of the dockyard. At this time, HMS Albion was a transport dock, a versatile vessel designed to carry and land vehicles, troops, and supplies. However, with the increasing need for the Royal Navy to project power and support amphibious operations, the decision was made to convert her into a Commando Carrier. The conversion process involved the installation of a ski-jump ramp at the bow of the ship, enabling short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft to launch from the deck. The flight deck was also extended and strengthened, and a hangar was added to accommodate the aircraft when they were not in use. In the photograph, we can see several aircraft, including Sea Hawk jet fighters, lined up on the flight deck, ready for loading onto the ship. These aircraft would play a crucial role in providing air support for the commando forces that would be embarked on the ship. The conversion of HMS Albion marked a significant milestone in the development of the Royal Navy's amphibious capabilities. She went on to serve in the Falklands War in 1982, where she played a key role in the successful amphibious landing at San Carlos Water. This photograph captures a moment in time, as HMS Albion stood on the cusp of a new role, poised to make a major contribution to the Royal Navy's ability to project power and support military operations around the world.
