EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "The First RAF Argosy CMk1, XN814: A Pioneering Transport Aircraft The first Armstrong Whitworth AW660 Argosy CMk1, XN814, is a historic aircraft that marked a significant milestone in the Royal Air Force's (RAF) transport aviation history. This iconic aircraft, captured in this image, was the first of its kind to join the RAF fleet, revolutionizing the way military cargo and personnel were transported. Manufactured by Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Limited, the Argosy CMk1 was a versatile, medium-range, twin-engine transport aircraft designed to meet the RAF's requirements for a successor to the Avro York and Handley Page Andover. The Argosy's distinctive hump-backed design housed a large cargo hold, capable of accommodating various types of military equipment and personnel. XN814 made its first flight on 24th March 1963, and was delivered to the RAF on 24th May 1963. It was assigned to No. 216 Squadron at RAF Lyneham, where it began its operational duties, primarily transporting troops, equipment, and supplies to various locations around the world. The Argosy's impressive performance, range, and versatility quickly proved invaluable to the RAF, and it went on to serve with distinction for over two decades. This photograph captures the Argosy CMk1, XN814, in its prime, standing proudly on the tarmac, ready for its next mission. The image serves as a testament to the groundbreaking role this aircraft played in the RAF's transport aviation capabilities, and its enduring legacy in military aviation history.
