EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the daring spirit of Lieutenant John Cyril Porte (1884-1919) as he prepares for takeoff in his Deperdussin monoplane, shortly before the tragic accident that occurred during the Circuit of Britain air race in 1911. Porte, a British Army officer and pioneering aviator, is seen adjusting the controls of his aircraft with focused determination, wearing a leather flying helmet and goggles. The sleek and powerful Deperdussin monoplane, with its distinctive red, white, and blue livery, looms large in the background. The Circuit of Britain was a grueling long-distance air race that covered over 1,200 miles, testing both the endurance of the pilots and their aircraft. Porte, who was competing against some of the best aviators of the time, was in third place when disaster struck. On the sixth day of the race, as he approached the finish line, his engine failed, causing him to crash near Bournemouth. Despite his injuries, Porte managed to crawl out of the wreckage and was rescued by a passing motorist. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries just a few days later, on September 28, 1911. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges faced by early aviators, who pushed the boundaries of human flight in the pursuit of speed and distance records. Porte's legacy as a pioneering aviator lives on, inspiring future generations of pilots and aviation enthusiasts.
