EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph, taken outside Madame Pollets' café at Le Mans in 1908, we find four pioneers of transportation technology gathered together. From left to right, we have Major B.F.S. Baden-Powell, Hon. C.S. Rolls, Wilbur Wright, and Frank Hedges Butler. Major Baden-Powell, a renowned British military officer and author, is best known for his military manuals and for founding the Scout Movement. His presence in this photograph may seem unusual, but his interest in aviation was not insignificant. He had taken up flying as a hobby and even attempted to cross the English Channel by air in 1911. Next to him stands Hon. C.S. Rolls, the founder of Rolls-Royce Limited, the prestigious British automobile manufacturer. Rolls was an aviation enthusiast and had already established the Rolls-Royce Aero Engine Company in 1907. Wilbur Wright, the American inventor, is seated in the middle, holding a walking stick. He is famously known as one of the Wright Brothers, who are credited with inventing the world's first successful motor-operated airplane. Frank Hedges Butler, the last man in the photograph, was a British aviation pioneer and a pioneer of air transport. He is best known for his work on the development of seaplanes and airships. This photograph captures a moment in history when the minds of these four influential figures intersected, showcasing the spirit of innovation and progress that characterized the early days of transportation technology.
