EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in aviation history as Wilbur (centre) and Orville Wright (1871-1948) pose with Professor Huntington (extreme left) and Griffith Brewer (extreme right) at Shellbeach, Long Island, New York, on May 4, 1909. The Wright Brothers, pioneers of powered flight, had just completed the first successful series of public flights at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, in December 1903. By May 1909, they had refined their design and were demonstrating their aircraft to various dignitaries and interested parties. In this image, the Wright Brothers are seen in their element, surrounded by the excitement and curiosity of their contemporaries. Professor Huntington, a prominent scientist and educator, and Griffith Brewer, a well-known inventor, are shown examining the Wright Flyer III, the model used for the historic flights at Kill Devil Hills. The triplane, with its distinctive wings and tail structure, represents a major step forward in aviation technology. The Wright Brothers' groundbreaking achievements in aviation opened the door to a new era of transportation and exploration. Their determination and ingenuity paved the way for the development of modern airplanes and the aviation industry as we know it today. This photograph serves as a testament to their pioneering spirit and the transformative power of human innovation.
