1833 1897 Adelaide Cambridge Duchess I Ii Teck Wilhelmina Elizabeth

EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Adelaide Wilhelmina Elizabeth, Duchess of Teck, Princess of Cambridge, was born on May 24, 1833, in Coburg, Germany. She was the eldest daughter of Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, making her a granddaughter of King George III. Mary Adelaide's life was marked by royal connections and marital intrigue. In 1853, she married Prince Francis, Duke of Teck, who later became the 12th Prince of Wales upon the death of his elder brother, Edward VII. The couple had six children, including the future Queen Mary, who would go on to marry King George V in 1893. Mary Adelaide's striking beauty and grace made her a popular figure in royal circles. She was known for her elegant style and her devotion to her family. However, her marriage to Prince Francis was not without its challenges. Rumors of infidelity and financial difficulties marred their relationship, and they lived apart for several years. Despite these challenges, Mary Adelaide remained dedicated to her role as a mother and a royal figure. She was a patron of various charities and organizations, including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the British Red Cross. Mary Adelaide died on March 27, 1897, at the age of 63. She was mourned by her family and the British public, who remembered her as a gracious and devoted member of the royal family. Her legacy lived on through her daughter Queen Mary, who played a significant role in shaping the monarchy in the 20th century. This photograph captures Mary Adelaide in her later years, with a regal and serene expression that belies the complexities of her life. Her elegant attire and refined posture are a testament to her status as a princess and a duchess, while her piercing gaze suggests a woman of great intelligence and depth. The image serves as a poignant reminder of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on British royal history.
