EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, showcases three fascinating species of anemonefish: the Saddle Anemonefish (Amphiprion ephippium), the Three-band Anemonefish (Amphiprion tricinctus), and Commerson's Anemonefish (Amphiprion percula). The illustration was created by the skilled artist Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was renowned for his work as a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Saddle Anemonefish, also known as the Hippolyte Anemonefish, is depicted in the center of the image, named for the distinctive saddle-like marking on its body. The Three-band Anemonefish, to the left, derives its name from the three horizontal bands that run along its body. The Commerson's Anemonefish, or the Clown Anemonefish, is shown on the right, easily recognizable by its vibrant orange and white coloration. These anemonefish are expertly rendered in intricate detail, with each fish's unique features and scales meticulously hand-colored. The background is adorned with various other marine life, including a starfish and a crab, adding to the overall beauty and richness of the composition. This engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the time, providing a window into the natural world of over two centuries ago. The intricate technique of copperplate stipple engraving, combined with the masterful hand-coloring, results in a stunning visual representation of these fascinating anemonefish species.
