EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the pivotal moment in the history of Portuguese colonialism in Africa as Salvador Correia de Sa e Benevides, a Portuguese soldier and politician, leads an assault on Fort San Miguel in Luanda, Angola in 1647. The Dutch had occupied the fort since 1641, posing a significant threat to Portuguese control over their African territories. In response, Correia was commissioned to regain Angola and Sao Tome and Principe for Portugal. With a fleet at his disposal, Correia sailed to Angola and laid siege to Fort San Miguel. In this image, we see Correia and his troops, armed with muskets and artillery, preparing to storm the fort's walls. The cannons are positioned to rain down fire and destruction, while the Dutch defenders inside the fort respond with their own volley of shots. The smoke and dust from the battle fill the air, adding to the chaos and intensity of the scene. Correia's successful assault on Fort San Miguel marked the end of Dutch occupation in Angola and solidified Portuguese control over the region. He was subsequently appointed as the Governor of Angola, and his victory was celebrated throughout Portugal as a significant triumph in the country's colonial endeavors. This print serves as a testament to the military prowess and determination of Correia and the Portuguese forces, as well as the complex and often violent history of European colonialism in Africa.
