EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 77 from John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain, Volume 4 (1873), presents a stunning and intricately detailed hand-coloured lithograph of the Eurasian Woodcock, Scolopax rusticola. This beautiful avian species is depicted in its natural habitat, with a fluffy, camouflaged appearance that allows it to blend seamlessly into the forest floor. The Eurasian Woodcock is a member of the Charadriiformes order and the family Scolopacidae, and is known for its distinctive long, down-curved bill and distinctive crest on its forehead. In the background of the image, a cluster of Common Bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) can be seen, their vibrant blue flowers adding a splash of color to the otherwise monochromatic scene. The Common Bluebell is an angiosperm, or flowering plant, belonging to the family Asparagaceae and the order Asparagales. It is a popular flowering plant in Europe and is often found in woodlands and along the edges of forests. The Eurasian Woodcock is a ground-dwelling bird, and is most active during the daytime, although it is often mistaken for a nocturnal species due to its elusive behavior. The woodcock's diet consists mainly of earthworms, insects, and snails, which it locates by probing the ground with its long bill. During the breeding season, the female lays her eggs in a shallow nest on the ground, which is camouflaged with twigs and leaves. The chicks hatch after about 21 days and are able to fly after around 40 days. This exquisite print is a testament to the remarkable artistry and attention to detail of the Victorian era, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Eurasian Woodcock and the Common Bluebell. The intricate hand-coloring brings the image to life, making it a true masterpiece of 19th century natural history illustration.
