This exquisite watercolor painting, titled "Ff. 163," depicts the Magellanic Tapaculo, or Scytalopus magellanicus, a passerine bird native to the forests of South America. The illustration was created during Captain James Cook's second voyage of exploration to the southern continent, between the years 1772 and 1775. The painting was produced by the renowned naturalist and artist, George Forster, who meticulously documented the natural history of the lands and creatures encountered during the expedition. Forster identified the bird as Motacilla magellanica, a name now considered outdated. Forster's illustration captures the Magellanic Tapaculo in a perched position, showcasing its distinctive mottled plumage and robust legs. The Sauropsida, a group of vertebrates that includes reptiles and birds, is represented here through the anatomy of this avian subject.
