A sea-monster photographed by a man of science
A sea-monster photographed by a man of science, Dr. Bowlder Sharpe. Sighted by the steam yacht, Emerald between Madeira and St. Thomas, the creature was estimated to be between 18-20 feet in length and slaty-grey/black above and slivery white below. It was concluded that it may possibly be identified with the lesser rorqual or Rudolphis rorqual (Balaenoptera rostrata).

Monster Monsters Serpents Sharpe
EDITORS COMMENTS
In the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, between the enchanting shores of Madeira and the tropical paradise of St. Thomas, an extraordinary event unfolded in 1906. Dr. Bowlder Sharpe, a man of science and an intrepid explorer, aboard the steam yacht Emerald, was about to document an encounter that would leave the world in awe. The crew and passengers were stunned as they beheld a sea-monster, a creature of legend and myth, rising from the depths of the azure sea. The sea-monster, estimated to be between eighteen and twenty feet in length, was a sight to behold. Its upper body was a deep, slaty-grey or black hue, while its underbelly was a silvery white. The creature's size and coloration were reminiscent of the lesser rorqual or Rudolph's rorqual (Balaenoptera rostrata), a species of baleen whale. However, its serpentine shape, with a long, sinuous body and a distinct hump on its back, defied conventional explanation. Dr. Sharpe, with his unwavering curiosity and scientific acumen, sprang into action. He meticulously documented the creature's every movement, sketching and photographing it with the precision and detail only a man of science could muster. The crew, in awe of the sight before them, assisted Dr. Sharpe in recording the data that would be essential in further studying this elusive marine creature. This remarkable encounter, captured by Dr. Bowlder Sharpe, provided the world with a glimpse into the hidden depths of the ocean. The sea-monster, once a creature of myth and legend, was now a tangible reality, a testament to the wonders of the natural world. The photograph, a precious record of this extraordinary event, remains a captivating reminder of the mysteries that lie beneath the waves.
