EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Sea Sturgeon, Acipenser sturio, a large and ancient fish species native to the Atlantic Ocean and its tributaries. The illustration is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Sea Sturgeon, also known as the European Sea Sturgeon or the Atlantic Sturgeon, is a large, prehistoric-looking fish, with a long, slender body, and distinctive rows of scutes covering its back and sides. This fish can grow up to 2.5 meters in length and weigh over 600 kg. The Sea Sturgeon is an anadromous fish, meaning it spends most of its life in the sea but returns to freshwater to spawn. The engraving was expertly executed by the skilled hands of Massard, under the direction of Turpin. The stipple technique used in this print creates a textured and detailed representation of the Sea Sturgeon's intricate scales and body structure. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the illustration. The Sea Sturgeon was once abundant in European waters, but due to overfishing and habitat destruction, populations have declined significantly. Today, the Sea Sturgeon is considered an endangered species, and efforts are being made to protect and conserve this ancient and valuable fish species.
