Booking Boxes Circles Distinction Gallery Lay Out Lyceum Plans Prices Ranging Seating Stalls Strand Theatres Ticket

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this print from the Mary Evans Picture Library, showcasing the historic seating plans of the Lyceum and Strand Theatres in Britain during the early 1900s. The intricate layout reveals the distinction between the various classes and pricing tiers available for theatre-goers during this era. The Lyceum Theatre, located on the Strand in London, is depicted on the left side of the print. The seating arrangement includes the Pit, Stalls, Circle, and Gallery. The Pit, located at the front of the theatre, offered standing room only for those seeking a more immersive experience. The Stalls, situated in the orchestra level, provided comfortable seating closer to the stage, while the Circle offered a raised view with a slightly obstructed sightline. The Gallery, the uppermost seating area, offered the most affordable option with a bird's-eye view of the performance. On the right side of the print, the seating plan for the Strand Theatre is displayed. Similar to the Lyceum, the Strand Theatre featured a Pit, Stalls, Circle, and Gallery. The Boxes, an additional seating option not present in the Lyceum plan, are shown at the sides of the theatre. These private, enclosed spaces offered a more luxurious experience for those willing to pay a premium price. This print not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of British theatre but also offers a unique insight into the class distinctions and pricing structures of the time. Whether you're a history buff, a theatre enthusiast, or simply someone intrigued by the past, this print is a must-have addition to your collection.
