1801 1855 1874 Appointed Baron Maule Minister Panmure

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Fox Maule, the Second Baron Panmure, a prominent figure in British politics during the mid-19th century. Born on March 12, 1801, Maule was raised in Scotland and entered Parliament in 1826 as the representative for Haddingtonshire. His political career flourished under the Whig Party, and he held various positions of power, including Postmaster General and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. In 1855, Maule's political prowess was recognized when he was appointed as the Minister of War in the Palmerston Ministry. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in the Crimean War, overseeing the military efforts against Russia. His leadership was marked by a commitment to modernizing the British military, including the implementation of new tactics and the establishment of the War Office. Despite his successes, Maule's tenure as Minister of War was not without controversy. Critics accused him of being too lenient towards the military, and he faced criticism for the slow response to the Crimean crisis. Nevertheless, his contributions to British military reform were significant, and he left a lasting impact on the country's defense capabilities. Maule's political career continued until his retirement from Parliament in 1868. He passed away on December 13, 1874, leaving behind a rich legacy as a statesman and military leader. This portrait, taken during his time as Minister of War, is a testament to his influential role in British history.
