Sem on the Riviera: A Page of Caricatures by Georges Goursat from 1913 This image showcases a collection of caricatures by the renowned French caricaturist, Georges Goursat, better known by his pen name Sem. The scene unfolds on the French Riviera, a popular destination for the wealthy and famous during the early 20th century. Clockwise from the top left, we encounter an array of prominent personalities of the time. Lord Howard de Walden, a British peer, is depicted with a smirk and monocle. Mr. Gordon Bennett, the millionaire newspaper proprietor, is shown with a mischievous grin and a cigar. Both men were frequent visitors to Monte Carlo's Casino. Lords Wandsworth, Savile, and Westbury, all resplendent in their formal attire, are gathered at the prestigious Hotel de Paris. M. Santos Dumont, a Brazilian aviation pioneer, and M. Henri Rochefort, a journalist and politician, are captured at the Hotel Metropole. The Duc de Dino, a Monaco nobleman, completes the circle. The Grand Duke Michael of Russia, who was also a regular at the Riviera, is not present in this particular gathering. Sem's caricatures offer a glimpse into the social scene of the French Riviera in 1913, capturing the essence of the personalities and their unique characteristics with his signature wit and artistic flair.
