EDITORS COMMENTS
In the harsh and unforgiving terrain of southern Serbia, near the town of Strumnitza, the First Great Serbian Army faced a formidable challenge during the darkest days of the First World War. In November 1915, as the Serbian forces retreated from the advancing Bulgarian army, they found themselves in a precarious position. Two Serbian armoured cars, part of the Fortunino Matania's 1st Company, were ambushed by Bulgarian soldiers, who were determined to seize any advantage they could in the waning days of the conflict. The photograph captures the aftermath of this unexpected encounter. One armoured vehicle, its engine still roaring, manages to escape the ambush, leaving behind its comrade in arms. The second vehicle, however, is not so fortunate. It veers off the road and becomes stranded in a deep ditch, its wheels spinning helplessly in the mud. Despite the efforts of the Serbian soldiers to extricate their vehicle, they are unable to do so. The Bulgarian soldiers, sensing their opportunity, close in, capturing not only the stranded armoured car but also a Serbian lieutenant and several men. The scene is a stark reminder of the brutal realities of war, where the line between victory and defeat can be as thin as a thread. This historical photograph, taken in November 1915, provides a glimpse into the past, offering a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War. The image, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Prints Online, is a valuable addition to any historical or military archive, offering a unique perspective on a pivotal moment in the conflict between Serbia and Bulgaria.
