EDITORS COMMENTS
1. This set of eight lithographs, housed in a folio, offers a poignant glimpse into the experiences of soldiers during World War I. Each print bears an inscription that adds to the narrative. The first lithograph is inscribed "Private B. Miller, Queens Westminsters, out since 1914," providing a personal connection to the soldier depicted. 2. The second lithograph is inscribed "Of the Labour Battalion," highlighting the diverse roles soldiers played during the war. The following images depict various soldiers in quiet moments, such as a soldier reading a newspaper and a Scottish soldier writing a letter home. 3. Sylvia Packard (1881-1962), the talented artist behind these lithographs, was born in Ipswich and trained at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. She exhibited her paintings, primarily landscapes, between 1909 and 1928. 4. In 1916, Packard took over the art department at the Royal School for Officers Daughters in Bath. Upon her retirement, she founded a firm of tile manufacturers, Packard & Ord, with Rosalind Ord. This firm later became Marlborough Tiles. 5. These lithographs offer a unique perspective on the war, capturing the human side of the soldiers' experiences. Packard's artistic talent is evident in her ability to convey emotion and connection through her work. These prints serve as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during World War I.
