EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor painting by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans captures the unique interaction between the Shining Cuckoo (Pipiwharauroa, Chrysococcyx lucidus lucidus) and a Grey Warbler (Gerygone igata) nest. The Shining Cuckoo is a native New Zealand cuckoo, known for its parasitic breeding habits. Instead of building their own nests, adult Shining Cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, particularly warblers. Once hatched, the cuckoo chick grows rapidly, often outpacing its foster siblings. The adult Shining Cuckoo depicted in this artwork is shown with its distinctive iridescent blue-green back and rufous underparts. The young cuckoo, still with its downy feathers, is nestled among the Grey Warbler's eggs and chicks in their intricately woven nest. This scene provides a poignant reminder of the cuckoo's intriguing reproductive strategy and the delicate balance between different species in the natural world. This artwork is taken from Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," published in 1888. Buller was a pioneering ornithologist who dedicated his life to documenting New Zealand's unique avian fauna. Keulemans' meticulous watercolors, which accompanied Buller's text, remain some of the most beautiful and accurate records of New Zealand's birds from this period.
