The Shrine of St Edward and its part in the Coronation cerem
A diagrammatic drawing to show the function of the Shrine of St. Edward in Westminster Abbey during the Coronation ceremony (in this case, that of King Edward VI). After the King is crowned, he passes through the door on the South side of the high altar into St. Edwards Chapel. The Queen at the same time passes into the chapel via a door on the North side of the altar. The King, standing before the altar delivers the sceptre with the dove to the Archbishop who lays it on the altar. He is then disrobed of his Royal Robe of State and arrayed in a Robe of purple velvet and, wearing his Imperial Crown, receives the orb from the Archbishop and then, their Majesties proceed through the Choir towards the West Door of the Abbey. Date: 1937

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Shrine of St. Edward at Westminster Abbey: A Pivotal Moment in the Coronation Ceremony of King Edward VI (1547-1553) This evocative diagrammatic drawing offers a glimpse into the historical and ceremonial significance of the Shrine of St. Edward during the coronation of King Edward VI of England in 1537. The shrine, located within the hallowed walls of Westminster Abbey, played a crucial role in the grand proceedings. Following his anointing and crowning at the high altar, King Edward VI (pictured here in his regal attire) passed through the South door into the sanctum of St. Edward's Chapel. Simultaneously, the Queen entered the chapel via a door on the North side of the altar. This momentous occasion marked the beginning of their reign as monarch and consort, respectively. Within the chapel, the King delivered the sceptre with the dove to the Archbishop, who placed it on the altar. The King was then disrobed of his Royal Robe of State and arrayed in a Robe of purple velvet. Wearing his Imperial Crown, he received the orb from the Archbishop. Their Majesties then proceeded through the Choir towards the West Door of the Abbey, signifying the commencement of their reign. The Shrine of St. Edward, a symbol of the monarchy's connection to the divine, served as a sacred backdrop to this pivotal moment in English history. This drawing, created in 1937, offers a captivating glimpse into the ceremonial and ritualistic aspects of the coronation ceremony, transporting us back in time to an era of grandeur and tradition.
