This evocative print captures the likeness of Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat (1667-1747), a prominent figure in Scottish history as the last Jacobite chief to be executed in Britain. Born into the illustrious Clan Fraser, Lovat was a passionate supporter of the House of Stuart and the Jacobite cause, which aimed to restore the exiled James II and his descendants to the British throne. During the Jacobite rising of 1745, Lovat played a pivotal role in rallying support for the young pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and was appointed as the Prince's Lieutenant-General of the Army. However, after the defeat of the Jacobite forces at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, Lovat was captured and brought before a military tribunal. Despite his advanced age and poor health, Lovat was found guilty of treason and sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. However, the sentence was later commuted to decapitation, and on April 16, 1747, Lovat met his grisly end at the Tower of London. This haunting print immortalizes the image of the proud and defiant Lovat, who, even in the face of certain death, refused to betray his loyalty to the Stuart cause. The print serves as a poignant reminder of the turbulent history of Scotland and the enduring legacy of the Jacobite rebellion.
