1832 Baron Barrister Born Judge Killowen L Aw Liberal Russell

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Charles Russell, 1st Baronet of Killowen (1832-1900), was a prominent British judge and Liberal Member of Parliament, born in Ireland. Known for his legal acumen and political prowess, Russell's illustrious career began as a barrister in the Inner Temple in London. He was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1873 and a judge of the Queen's Bench Division in 1880. In 1885, he was created a Baronet, taking the title of Baronet of Killowen. This photograph, taken in 1890, captures Sir Charles Russell in the prime of his career. His distinguished appearance and serious expression reflect the gravity of his role as a judge and MP. The black robe and wig, traditional attire for British judges at the time, further underscore his status. Born in County Cork, Ireland, Russell's Irish heritage was a source of pride throughout his life. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, before moving to England to pursue a legal career. His political beliefs leaned strongly towards liberalism, and he was a vocal advocate for social reforms, including the extension of the franchise and the abolition of the death penalty. Russell's legal expertise and political influence extended beyond the borders of the UK. He served as a judge in the High Court of Justice in Cyprus from 1893 to 1895 and was later appointed a judge of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in 1897. His contributions to British law and politics left a lasting impact, and he is remembered as one of the most influential figures in the history of the British legal system and Liberal Party.
