Sir Charles Dilke, 2nd Baronet (1843-1911), was a prominent English Liberal and Radical politician of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. In this photograph, taken in the year 1901, Sir Charles is depicted in formal attire, with a well-groomed beard and an air of authority and intelligence. Born into a prominent family, Dilke was educated at Eton and Oxford before entering politics. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Reading in 1868, and went on to hold various cabinet positions under Liberal prime ministers Gladstone and Campbell-Bannerman. Dilke was known for his radical views on social reform, including women's suffrage, Irish home rule, and the abolition of the House of Lords. He was also a prolific writer, publishing numerous books on politics, travel, and history. Despite his political successes, Dilke's career was not without controversy. In 1885, he was involved in a scandal involving a relationship with a married woman, which led to his resignation from the cabinet and a period of political exile. He was eventually reinstated in the Liberal Party, and continued to be an influential figure in British politics until his retirement in 1906.
