1726 1792 Dalrymple Historian Judge

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir David Dalrymple, 1st Baronet of Hailes (1726-1792), was a distinguished Scottish judge and historian, whose significant contributions to Scottish legal history and the study of Scottish antiquities continue to be celebrated. Born in Edinburgh, Dalrymple studied law at the University of Edinburgh and was called to the bar in 1752. He was appointed a judge of the Court of Session in 1761, and later became Lord President of the Court in 1775. Dalrymple's historical works, which drew on his extensive knowledge of Scottish antiquities, are considered seminal in the field. His most famous work, "The Feudal Law of Scotland," published in 1771, is a comprehensive study of Scottish feudal law and remains a valuable resource for scholars today. Dalrymple's other historical works include "An Essay towards a Topographical History of Scotland" and "The History of Scotland from the Union of the Crowns to the Present Time." This photograph print captures Sir David Dalrymple in later life, with a serious and thoughtful expression. He is dressed in the formal attire of a Scottish judge, wearing a black robe and white wig. The background is simple, with a plain wall and a window providing the only visual interest. The image serves as a reminder of Dalrymple's significant contributions to Scottish history and the legal system, and his enduring influence on the study of Scottish antiquities. Sir David Dalrymple's legacy extends beyond his legal and historical work. He was a founding member of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and played a key role in the establishment of the National Museum of Scotland. His commitment to preserving Scotland's cultural heritage continues to inspire generations of scholars and enthusiasts. This photograph print is a testament to Dalrymple's enduring influence and his place in Scottish history as a respected judge, historian, and advocate for the preservation of Scotland's rich cultural heritage.
