1724 1804 Lawyer

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir David Rae, 1st Baronet of Eskgrove (1724-1804), was a distinguished Scottish lawyer and statesman of the late 18th century. Born in Edinburgh, Rae studied law at the University of Edinburgh and was called to the Scottish Bar in 1747. He quickly rose through the ranks of the legal profession, becoming Solicitor General for Scotland in 1762 and Lord Advocate in 1766. In these roles, Rae played a key part in shaping Scottish legal and political history. During his tenure as Lord Advocate, Rae was instrumental in the passage of several important pieces of legislation, including the Scotland Act of 1763, which established a more centralized Scottish government, and the Scotland Act of 1773, which reformed the Scottish legal system. He also served as a member of the Privy Council of Scotland and was a delegate to the British Parliament. Despite his political successes, Rae's personal life was marked by tragedy. His first wife, Margaret, died in childbirth in 1762, leaving him with two young children. He later married Anne, the daughter of the Earl of Selkirk, but she died in 1780, leaving him with no surviving heirs. In 1786, Rae was created a Baronet, becoming Sir David Rae, 1st Baronet of Eskgrove. This portrait of Sir David Rae, likely taken in later life, captures the stern yet intelligent expression of a man who dedicated his career to shaping the legal and political landscape of Scotland. With his piercing gaze and impeccably dressed attire, Rae exudes an air of authority and gravitas. The portrait is a testament to his remarkable achievements and enduring legacy as one of Scotland's most influential lawyers and statesmen.
