EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Laurence Olivier, at just fifteen years old, made his mark in his first leading Shakespearean role as Kate in Taming of the Shrew at All Saints Choir School in Margaret Street, London, and Stratford-on-Avon, in April 1922. The young Olivier's performance left a lasting impression on the theatre community, with renowned actress Ellen Terry declaring that she had never seen Kate better played, even by a woman, except for Ada Rehan. Sybil Thorndike went even further, praising Olivier as 'really wonderful, the best Shrew I ever saw - a bad-tempered little bitch.' A fellow actor recalled, 'What I remember about his Kate was his complete naturalness.' In this portrait, the young Olivier is seen donning the traditional Elizabethan costume of the character, complete with a fiery expression and a defiant posture. The photograph offers a glimpse into the early beginnings of a career that would go on to define the art of acting in the 20th century. Sir Laurence Olivier would continue to captivate audiences with his powerful performances, earning him numerous accolades and cementing his place in the annals of theatre history.
