Sir William Dugdale (1605-1686), a prominent antiquary, herald, and author of significant works on ecclesiastical architecture, is depicted in this portrait taken when he was around fifty years old. Dugdale, who served as Garter-King-of-Arms, was a dedicated scholar and historian, whose passion for uncovering the past left an indelible mark on the study of English history. Born in Warwickshire, England, Dugdale's interest in heraldry and antiquities began at an early age. He became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in London in 1636 and was later appointed Garter-King-of-Arms in 1639.
